Punch Needle Tip: Everyone’s pace and bodies are different; we suggest taking breaks to stretch out your neck and give your hands/wrists a breather. Taking this tip seriously can lead to even more happy Punch Needle fun and projects!
Step One: Choose a Pattern & Prepare Embroidery Hoop
The very fist step is to choose which Tree pattern you want to use for your Punch Needle how to project. Don’t worry, if you’re inbetween a few you can always do more than one!
After you’ve choosen a Tree pattern, you can prepare your Emboirdery Hoop with the proper amount of Monk’s Cloth (For whatever size Embroidery Hoop you’re using, make sure you have a few inches of extra Monk’s Cloth bordering).
When preparing your Embroidery Hoop with the Monk’s Cloth, make sure that your cloth is taut before you trace/draw your pattern on and most certainly before you start Punch Needling.
Now that your Monk’s Cloth is tight and ready to go, you can trace/draw your choosen Tree pattern on! For our Punch Needle how to, we’re going to work from the front and back side. Which means that we’ll be tracing/drawing only one part on the front side and the other part will be traced/drawn on the back side.
In Punch Needling, when the ‘Front Side‘ is refered to this usual means the flat stitches (In our photo examples this will be the trunk of the tree). And when refering to the ‘Back Side‘ this usually means the looped side or what people see as the fuzzy side (In our photo examples this will be the leaves of the tree).
Step Two: Thread Punch Needle & Start W/ Smaller Details
Before we can get into the Punch Needle fun, we’ve got to thread our Punch Needle first! You can learn how to thread a Punch Needle or if you need a refresher, and we suggest punching the smaller details of your project first.
This is a nice tip to follow because it’s better to punch your smaller details first so they don’t get lost in your larger details as your Punch Needle how to project moves along.
Make sure, once again, that your Monk’s Cloth is taut before you begin punching, otherwise you may not have the smoothest Punch Needle time.
Punch your needle into your cloth, ensuring your needle is punched all the way down, and pull the yarn tail (that you can see in the first photo) through to the other side. Then, pull your Punch Needle up but never let the tip lift completly off the Monk’s Cloth and start punching in the direction you want your yarn to be presented.
We find it nice and relaxing to outline our objects first and then Punch them in!
And just like that, the second step is complete! Now, we can move onto the fluffy leaves of this Tree Punch Needle how to DIY.
Step Three: Continue Punch Needling Larger Details
Now that the smaller details are taken care of, we can move onto the larger details of our Punch Needle how to Tree DIY– the leaves of course! So thread that Punch Needle in the yarn color of your choice and let’s get some leaves on this Tree.
As we mentioned above, we’re going to be working from the back side of our project to make the leaves nice and fluffy. To do this all you have to do is flip your project over and draw/trace a little tuft of leaves around where you can see your trunk, like in the photo below.
After this is done, you can start punching just like you did in the previous step but from the back side!
After you’ve been punching away for awhile and you’ve got enough leaves on your cute little Punch Needle how to Tree DIY, you can snip your yarn off and move onto the final phase!
Step Four: Snip Thread Tails & Complete!
Can you believe we’re already on the very last step, time sure flies when you’re Punch Needling!
