How to Make an American Flag Sign Using Scrap Wood

In this post I’ll be sharing How to Make an American Flag Sign Using Scrap Wood.

If you’ve been following me for a little while, you know that we’re remodeling our living room.

Part of the remodel meant replacing the windows.

We ended up using 1x lumber to trim the new windows.

I ripped the 1x on the table saw to fit the width of the windows.

When he was finished cutting, there were little scrap pieces left over.

My eyes met the scrap wood and I knew they would become an American flag.

I cheerfully gathered my bits of treasure and began making plans.

Scrap Wood Repurposed into American Flag

I laid out all the scrap wood to make 13 rows.

I found some extra pieces of lumber that I would use to attach the scraps to.

I laid the lumber on the scraps to get an idea of how wide I wanted to make the flag.

When I had the width just about so, I marked the scrap wood so I would know where to cut it.

Even though I drew a straight line across the wood, I ended up with varied lengths, but that was ok because I really wanted to take this project into the rustic arena.

The scrap wood also has nail holes and goopy paint that I didn’t sand completely off, so this was one rough and rustic project that ended up turning out beautifully.

I cut the scrap wood and the extra pieces of lumber to the desired lengths.

I then painted the scrap wood red and white.

I actually had enough wood, so I ended up making 2 flags.

Can you see how the pieces are varied in thickness?

I used wood glue to attach the 7 red and 6 white scraps onto the 2 pieces of lumber.

I tried hot glue on the second flag.

Both methods worked well though.

At some point I’ll probably reinforce the flag by nailing each piece onto the 2 boards.

I painted navy blue rectangles on the wood.

The picture below was just after one coat of blue.

I ended up painting 2 coats of navy blue and then stenciling 50 white stars on the blue portion.

After all the painting was done, I took a piece of 120 grit sandpaper and distressed the entire piece to get this beautiful result.

I’m very pleased with how it turned out.  What do you all think of this patriotic project?
