How to Repurpose a Ceiling Fan Blade into Easter Wall Art

In this post I’ll be sharing How to Repurpose a Ceiling Fan Blade into Easter Wall Art.

While I’ve repurposed my fair share of ceiling fan blades, I still have a few more projects up my sleeves when it comes to these flying fans, especially since we recently replaced the ceiling fan in the master bedroom.

This white ceiling fan blade is one of the appendages from the fixture.

I’ve been thinking about these fan blades, trying to think what else I could do with them.

I turned the blades around in my mind until inspiration hit and I realized that part of the blade looked like an egg.

Do you see it?

I thought I could use the broader part of the fan blade as an egg shell cup, and then fill the egg shell cup with a little baby chick.

As I was figuring out how to cut the egg shape out of the fan blade, I was also trying to figure out what I would use as a baby chick.

I thought of a fabric baby chick or a paper one, then it struck me, the other end of the ceiling fan blade looks like a little chick head.

So then all that was left to do, was get cracking on putting the ends together to make some cute Easter décor, pun intended. ;)

The First Steps: Cutting, Filling and Sanding

The first thing I did was take off the gold hardware.

I drew some jagged lines on the broader end of the fan blade.

After I had the lines drawn, I used a utility knife to cut the egg shell out.

I scored the lines several times with the utility knife and when it was scored sufficiently, I bent the end of the fan blade and it broke along the score lines.

It was jagged and imperfect, just like a real egg, and that was what I was hoping for.

Before painting it, I did take some sandpaper over the entire piece, including the edges to smooth out the leftover barbs from where the “shell” broke.

After the egg shell was cut I measured it against the narrow end of the ceiling fan blade to see how big the chick’s head should be.

Then I drew the line where I wanted to cut it.

After the narrow end was cut on the miter saw, I filled in the holes with wood filler, where the hardware used to be.

Once it was dry I sanded the excess off for a smooth finish. This is also when I sanded the shell part.

Painting the Pieces and Putting it Together

I painted the egg shell an off white color and the chick a mustard yellow color.

The egg shell and the chick were then hot glued together, and I painted a simple face on the chick.

To make a little sprig of hair on the chick, I dipped an old stencil brush in some yellow paint and let it dry out in the bristles.

After the yellow paint-dipped bristles were dried, I cut the bristles off and hot glued them onto the back of the chick head to make hair.

The chick and egg were all finished and just needed to be mounted onto a surface, I chose a board from an old fence.

I designed this “Happy Easter” stencil and cut it on my Cricut.

The SVG & JPEG Happy Easter cut file is available at the bottom of this post.

The board was sanded, stenciled and sealed with wax.

The chick and egg piece was then hot glued onto the wooden sign.

I crocheted some jute twine to use as a hanger.

I attached the jute twine by nailing it onto the back of the sign, and it was all ready to display.
