My sister-in-law recently gave us 2 pieces of canvas art that they no longer wanted, but felt sure I could find a new purpose for. I’m sharing How to Repurpose Canvas Art with Stencils and a Cricut machine in this post.
I love hanging things up on my walls. Seriously, I wish I had more wall space in our little house because I have an obsession with decorating walls.
Anyway, I decided to paint the 2 pieces of canvas art, but I’m only going to be showing 1 of the canvases in this post on How to Repurpose Canvas Art with Stencils and a Cricut Explore.
As you can see the picture is great, but of course I want to personalize it to fit into our home decor.
The first thing I did was give the canvas 2 coats of latex paint, letting it dry between coats.
Next I used my awesome Cricut Explore One to cut a stencil as explained in this tutorial using Show-Offs Stencil Blanks.
The cut file I designed is in being made available in my Resource Library.
I used a stencil brush, the stencil, and some latex paint to stencil the design on the canvas.
When I started stenciling on the canvas I didn’t think about the surface flexibility of the canvas, and how it wasn’t ideal for stenciling.
So to fix this I put a puzzle box under the canvas to give me a hard surface under the canvas, and because the puzzle box was thicker than the canvas thickness I had to use some DVD cases to prop up the frame of the canvas.
It was a little bit of a MacGyver moment but I think it worked well enough.
*note- When I designed this stencil I didn’t think about how the dot over the “i” on the bird would fall out. Usually I’m very conscientious of making sure that the stencil aspect of my designs are stencil ready but I missed that one.
Anyway because it was just the dot over the “i” I simply took the handle tip of the stencil brush I was using and made a dot of the “i” using the tip of the brush, easy fix.
I have made a corrected version of this design where the “i” connects to the rest of the stencil.
The look changed just a little and I have made both designs available in my Resource Library.
I love the dark and light blue combo, and these are just a few of the colors I’m running through our home.
*All free files in the Resource Library are for personal use only.
I hope you have enjoyed this How to Repurpose Canvas Art with Stencils and a Cricut Explore project.
