I was half awake, half asleep the other morning when this idea came to me: to turn one of the remaining ceiling fan blades from our airplane and coffee cup sign projects into a hot air balloon.  It has a somewhat balloonish shape, so that’s just what I did.  In this post I’ll be sharing How to Repurpose a Ceiling Fan Blade into a Hot Air Balloon Sign.

The pieces were cut to resemble the balloon and the basket.

I painted the balloon a white color, and the basket portion was painted tan.

I also cut a piece of cane, from the ceiling fan blade, in the shape of the basket, and painted that tan too.

After the fan blade basket shape and the cane were dried, I placed the cane on the basket shape and painted it again and they stuck together when the paint dried, no glue necessary.

I wanted to mount the balloon onto a board, so I used an old shelf from a bookcase that is no longer being used.

I first gave the shelf two coats of light blue, and when that was dry I painted white over the blue using a rag, just swirling and wiping, to give it a cloud look.

I crocheted some garland and flowers to decorate the balloon, and hot glued them on.

I shaped the garland and flowers to give the fan blade more of a balloon shape.

The basket was stenciled with these hearts, to give the look of the sandbags that are attached to hot air balloon baskets.

I stenciled “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” onto the top of the board.

I also stenciled 3 little hearts on the bottom of the board for my 3 little girls.

I used hot glue to attach the hot air balloon to the board.  Here’s the finished result:

    Here’s a close-up of the cloudy sky.

I love how it turned out!!

I like being able to make my own wall art.  It’s unique, and there’s meaning to it.
