The past 2 weeks I’ve showed you how I’ve repurposed a bamboo cutting board so that it’s reversible wall art. Well today I’m showing you How to Make a Reversible Chalkboard Cutting Board with another cutting board that I got from my family. I have to tell you I’m really loving these cutting boards. They’re so versatile and easy to work on.
The first part of this cutting board’s transformation was getting a good sanding, which my husband graciously did for me.
After the board was sanded and wiped down, it was time to paint it. I like using this recipe for chalkboard paint; its always worked well for me. There wasn’t a lot of black paint left in my Valspar sample jar so I just mixed the grout and water in the sample container to make things easier. After the grout, water, and paint were good and mixed, I put 2 coats of chalkboard paint on both sides of the cutting board, letting it dry between coats.
I designed some stencils to add to the cutting board. I wanted some permanent headings on the chalkboard so it could just be filled in. I made a “So Thankful For…” and a “Menu” stencil, and both of these are available in the Resource Library for Subscribers. There are also printables of the Thankful and Menu headers in the Resource Library, so that they can be printed off and put into a frame. Then the “So Thankful For…” and the “Menu” can be filled in on the glass of the frame using a dry erase marker.
The “So Thankful For…” and the “Menu” were stenciled on using a stencil brush and white latex paint. After the paint was dried, the chalkboard was cured by rubbing chalk all over it. Then it was ready for use.
Here’s how it looks on the Menu side of the board.
As you can see from the picture, I chose not to paint the sides of the cutting board.
Here’s the “So Thankful For…” side of the chalkboard. I hope you have enjoyed this reversible chalkboard cutting board project!!
