This is how I repurposed a dustpan.
I found this dustpan at an estate sale and bought it for 50 cents!! What a deal! I knew right away that I had to give this little thing new life.
First I cleaned it up (it was a little dusty). hehe. Then I found out that it was plated with copper so the copper tone would be irreparable unless I re-plated it with copper, uh not going to happen. So I had a decision to make, leave it as-is or paint it. As pretty as copper is, my pretty copper piece had rust coming through from the metal underneath, so I decided to paint it.
Sanding the dustpan was essential to smooth the metal barbs on it and to scratch the surface a bit for the primer to stick well.
Preparation for the attachments were made and it was painted with a lovely cream-color.
Then for the finishing touches: I repurposed shower hooks taking the flowers off and feeding the hooks through the holes and gluing them in place to be key holders. I also used jute twine to hang the dustpan and put a bow on the handle for a soft touch.
And for 50 cents I got a handy dandy mail and key holder.
I was pleased with the outcome of this project and we now have a place to put our mail and keys where our girls can’t reach them and hide them. 🙂
