Repurposed Old Book Bag/Tote into a Pillow
My sister took a trip to India and like a good sister she brought me back an awesome souvenir, a handmade leather bag/tote. I used this bag to carry books in during college and like all beloved things that are used a lot it got worn out and I had to cease using my beautiful tote. *sniff, sniff*
As you can see from the picture the bottom was worn out from carrying a million pounds of books around campus. It had sentimental value but it was also beautifully crafted. I held onto this bag for years, putting it away and not using it. Then one day I got to thinking, “I could do something else with this.” My two ideas were to either use it as a pillow case or cut it up and frame it. I took a survey with my husband and sister and the verdict was: to use it as a pillow.
Luckily for me this particular bag already had a zipper in it which was a lifesaver. I have never installed a zipper; I hand that work off to my mom. 🙂 I do know how to work a sewing machine and so the only thing left for me to do was to sew up the broken bottom of the bag and trim off excess.
The tote had handles that needed to be taken off were attached with grommets which my husband was able to detach for me. I then stuffed the bag with an unused pillow that was lying around the house and zipped it up.
The grommets left holes in the top of the bag so I used some jute and threaded the twine through the holes and tied it to make rustic ribbons to cover the holes.
The cool thing about this pillow is that it has a zippered pocket—just one more place for my little girls to hide things.
The beautiful color of the bag matches my orange-accented living room and that is where the pillow has found a home.
I love how the project turned out and am glad that my beautiful bag is being used again.
