DIY Triple Bunk Beds
When planning my daughters’ room, I took into particular account that there were 3 beds that I needed to fit into a 11’x12′ room, while still leaving plenty of space for them to play and read. The solution was to go vertical, so I went to Pinterest to search for Triple Bunk Bed ideas. I found this particular bed and I loved how it staggered the beds with one going the opposite way. I showed my husband the picture and I asked if he could build something like that. He said he could but he would modify it a bit. He’s here on the blog today to tell you how he made these lovely triple bunk beds for our daughters. Here he is now:
I used 10- 2″x6″x10′ and 10- 2″x4″x10′ lumber for this project.
I joined 2″x4″s together to make 6 corner pieces. 4 of the posts measured 66 1/8″ tall and the 2 corner pieces for the middle bed.
I used 2″x6″ boards to connect two corner pieces to make a headboard and footboard. When adding the middle 2″x6″ for the middle bunk bed, I initially cut 6″ out of the corner post so the 2″x6″ could extend past the corner post, but ended up cutting 2 1/4″ more so the mattress could fit under the corner post better.
I built the headboard and footboard in the garage, then I carried the segments in the house and into the room they would go in. I set the headboard and footboard up and attached the side boards and the railing. I used 2 1/2″ screws to attach all pieces and drilled quarter inch countersink holes to hide all the screws.
The middle bed had 2- 2″x6″s running out in the opposite direction as the other two beds and I supported this bed with the 2″x4″ corner pieces. I also drilled supports to each bed and laid 1″x2″ boards on the supports for their mattresses to rest on. I’ll turn it back over to my wife now.
Ok, I’m back. I filled in all the screw holes with wood filler and sanded it.
Then I painted the beds the same color as the rest of the furniture.
I also stenciled the beds with the same butterfly and cherry blossom design that I used on the other furniture.
My daughters love their new beds!! I think my husband did an amazing job on these; and I love that they fit perfectly in my daughters’ room!
