Bathroom Storage Shelf
As some of you know we have been putting the finishing touches on our bathroom. I’ve slowly been adding things to the walls. We’ve been needing some storage above the toilet, and I wanted a shelf for such an occasion. I saw this fantastic shelf by Sara from Twelve On Main and pinned it to my Pinterest. A few days ago I remembered that beautiful shelf and I decided I wanted something similar to it, for the area above the toilet. We already have the toilet paper holder and the hand towel holder on 2″x4″s, so I wanted to stick with that theme when building this shelf. I showed my husband the finished shelf picture from Twelve On Main. I told him that I would like a 20″ shelf and specified some other changes I wanted to be made. An hour later he came back with this:
I’ll turn it over to my husband to let him to tell you how he did it:
I used two old pieces of 2×4’s I found in the garage for the top of the shelf. I cut them both to length and sat them aside.
I then found a six foot piece of 1×2 that was ripped out of an old laundry cabinet. I cut two 6 inch pieces of 1×2 and screwed them together at a 90 degree angle. I then braced the 90 degree angle with another piece of 1×2. I made a duplicate brace piece and screwed both of them onto the bottom of the 2×4’s to basically make the shelf.
I also screwed in a piece of 1×2 on to the bottom of the back 2×4, so we could attach the shelf to the wall using the 1×2 as an anchor.
When I use screws to attach one piece of wood to another I like to first drill a pilot hole and then drill a countersink hole. This allows me to sink or “hide” the screw into the wood.
I filled this shelf with wood filler where all the holes and cracks were. I used 80 grit sandpaper to smooth the shelf out, and then finished it off with a 400 grit to give the shelf a smooth surface. I’ll turn it back over to my wife and let her tell you about how she finished up the project.
Hi, I’m back. After the shelf was constructed I gave it two coats of green paint that matched the rest of the bathroom hardware. I then stenciled the shelf.
What do you think of the new shelf?
I like that the shelf is smallish, but big enough to put extra toilet paper on and even knick knacks on it.
We put drywall screws in the wall and then screwed the shelf in using the 1″x2″ below the shelf.
Thanks so much for checking out this post!!
