Carving a Sign Using a Stencil
When I think of a stencil, I think of stenciling using paint. However, stencils can also be used to make patterns on different mediums, including wood. Recently, we purchased a piece of basswood and a stencil at Hobby Lobby as a carving project for my husband. (I didn’t get any before or in process pictures of the wood before it was carved.)
My husband went to work outlining the stencil onto the face of the wood using a pencil. Then he set to work chip carving, “Hope” on the basswood.
After it was carved I gave it a few coats of Dark Walnut stain. I gave it 2 coats of polyurethane, sanding with 220 grit sandpaper between coats.
I also attached a frame hanger to the back so it could hang on our wall.
I love how the stain brings out the beauty of the carving.
Is there anything that you use stencils for other than painting?
